Does CHAMPVA cover CPAP and other durable medical equipment?
Educational info, not medical advice. Last verified Oct 14, 2026.
Coverage status: Covered with conditions
Short answer: Yes, CHAMPVA covers durable medical equipment (DME) that a physician orders for a medical need. The Guidebook doesn't list CPAP by name, so call CHAMPVA to confirm your device and supplies.
What counts as durable medical equipment
The Guidebook defines DME as equipment that can stand up to repeated use, is mainly for a medical purpose, generally isn’t useful without an illness or injury, and is appropriate for use at home. It must be ordered by a physician. VA’s CHAMPVA care page lists “medical equipment that your provider prescribes to support your everyday activities” among covered services.
Does CHAMPVA cover a CPAP machine?
The Guidebook and VA’s CHAMPVA care page don’t name CPAP machines specifically. They’re physician-ordered home equipment, so they fall under the DME rules above. Coverage “may be authorized for customization, accessories, or supplies,” plus repair, adjustment, and replacement due to normal wear or a change in your condition. Call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 to confirm your exact device and supplies before you buy.
Equipment with extra paperwork
The Guidebook asks for a Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN) or doctor’s order for some items:
- Oxygen and concentrators: a CMN with flow rate, how often and how long, expected length of need, and delivery method.
- Motorized wheelchairs or scooters: a CMN or doctor’s order with the diagnosis, plus a seating evaluation.
- TENS units and wound VACs: a CMN or doctor’s order.
- Barrier-free lifts: a CMN with medical documentation.
Not covered
- DME that Medicare or your other insurance denied as not medically necessary
- Luxury or deluxe equipment, and maintenance agreements
- Exercise equipment, hot tubs, spas, and whirlpools
- Home or vehicle modifications, and non-detachable vehicle lifts
- Hearing aids that aren’t surgically implanted or anchored
Preauthorization
VA’s list of care that needs approval first doesn’t include medical equipment: it covers inpatient mental health, substance use treatment, dental care, and organ transplants. Medical equipment through a VA facility’s CITI program doesn’t need approval first. See what needs preauthorization.
What you pay
When CHAMPVA is primary, you pay the yearly outpatient deductible ($50 per person, $100 per family) and a 25% cost share of the allowable amount. When CHAMPVA is secondary, you usually pay nothing. Your family’s costs are capped at $3,000 per calendar year. More: deductible, cost share, and catastrophic cap.
Not sure? Call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 (TTY 711), Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. ET. The Guidebook says a service listed as covered doesn't guarantee payment. See all CHAMPVA coverage answers.
