Does CHAMPVA cover Wegovy, Zepbound, or Ozempic? (GLP-1 rules)

Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last verified against VA.gov: October 10, 2026 (VA CHAMPVA care page updated Aug 12, 2026). Changelog

Short answer: CHAMPVA covers prescription GLP-1 medications only when they’re prescribed for an FDA-approved reason that matches your diagnosis. VA says plainly: CHAMPVA doesn’t cover prescription GLP-1 medications for weight loss.

Which drug, for which diagnosis

VA’s CHAMPVA care page lists:

If you have this diagnosisCHAMPVA covers
Type 2 diabetesMounjaro, Ozempic, Trulicity, Victoza
Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apneaZepbound
MASH (metabolic-associated steatohepatitis), or prevention of major heart events (MACE) with prior eventsWegovy
Weight loss only (no qualifying diagnosis above)Not covered

The CHAMPVA Guidebook says the same thing in other places: “weight control medication or weight reduction programs” are not covered, and weight-loss medications are covered when there is a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. The federal rule (38 CFR 17.272) also excludes nonsurgical treatment of obesity for weight reduction.

Talk to your prescriber. Coverage follows the diagnosis on the prescription. If you have one of the conditions above, make sure your doctor documents it. If your only goal is weight loss, CHAMPVA won't pay for these drugs.

Weight-loss surgery is different

The Guidebook says surgery for morbid obesity may be covered when your BMI is over 40, or over 35 with serious medical conditions caused or made worse by obesity, or for a second surgery to fix complications. Covered procedures are limited (for example, gastric banding and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), and claims must include BMI, height, weight, and history of other treatments tried.
