Short answer: if you’re eligible for TRICARE, you can’t get CHAMPVA. VA’s rules say so directly.
| CHAMPVA | TRICARE | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | Department of Veterans Affairs | Department of Defense |
| For | Spouses, children, and survivors of veterans rated permanently and totally (P&T) disabled from a service-connected disability, or who died from one | Active-duty and retired service members, their families, and survivors |
| Can you have both? | No. TRICARE eligibility rules you out of CHAMPVA | — |
Common situations
- Family of a military retiree who is also rated P&T by VA: usually TRICARE-eligible, so CHAMPVA isn’t available. Check with TRICARE.
- Family of a P&T veteran who did not retire from the military: usually not TRICARE-eligible, so CHAMPVA may be the option.
- Not sure? Check TRICARE eligibility on the TRICARE website before applying for CHAMPVA.
