Which children qualify

A child of a qualifying veteran sponsor can be covered. The Guidebook says “child” includes birth, adopted, stepchild, or helpless child as determined by a VA regional office. The child can’t be eligible for TRICARE. Sponsor rules: Eligibility.

Newborns: act fast

VA can’t pay a newborn’s claims until the baby is enrolled in CHAMPVA. Before applying:

  1. Get the baby a Social Security number.
  2. Add the child as the veteran’s dependent through a VA regional office.
  3. Then apply with VA Form 10-10d as soon as possible. See How to apply.

The Guidebook says that apart from routine in-hospital newborn care billed with the mother, a newborn’s services are covered only if the child is also eligible for CHAMPVA.

What kids get

Ages 18 to 23

Coverage ends at 18 unless the child is in school or is a helpless child.
