CHAMPVA for college students: staying covered from 18 to 23
Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last verified against VA.gov: October 10, 2026 (VA CHAMPVA care page updated Aug 12, 2026). Changelog
Short answer: A child covered by CHAMPVA can keep it from age 18 until 23 while enrolled in school, but only if CHAMPVA gets proof of enrollment. Coverage ends when you leave school or turn 23, whichever comes first.
Who qualifies
VA says a dependent child age 18 or older keeps CHAMPVA if they’re enrolled in high school, college, or another educational institution. Coverage also ends before 23 if the child:
- Gets married
- Becomes eligible for TRICARE
- Is a stepchild who no longer lives in the sponsor’s household (there’s an exemption for stepchildren 18 to 23 living in on- or off-campus housing during school terms)
A child who became permanently unable to support themselves before 18 (a “helpless child”) follows different rules; see When CHAMPVA ends for a child.
The school certification letter
Ask your school to write a letter on school letterhead that includes:
- Your full name and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number
- Your estimated graduation date
- Start and end dates for the semester or term
- Signature and title of a school official
Deadlines
- Between high school and college: to avoid a gap, you can send your college acceptance letter.
- After your first term starts: send the school certification letter within 1 month.
- Every year: recertify at least once a year.
