Does CHAMPVA cover braces or dental implants?
Educational info, not medical advice. Last verified Oct 11, 2026.
Coverage status: Not covered
Short answer: No, CHAMPVA doesn’t cover braces or routine dental work; dental care is covered only in rare cases tied to treating another medical condition, so look at VADIP dental insurance instead.
Key conditions
- Not covered: routine dental care, orthodontia (braces), and adding or modifying dentures or partials (Guidebook).
- Dental implants: the Guidebook doesn’t address them by name. Call CHAMPVA.
- Narrow exceptions: dental care that’s part of treating another covered medical condition, such as loss of jaw tissue from trauma or cancer treatment, or gum overgrowth caused by seizure medication (Guidebook; 38 CFR 17.272).
Preauthorization
All dental care needs preauthorization (Guidebook).
What you pay
For the rare covered dental care: When CHAMPVA is primary, you pay the yearly outpatient deductible ($50 per person, $100 per family) and a 25% cost share. When CHAMPVA is secondary, you usually pay nothing. Your family’s costs are capped at $3,000 per calendar year (Guidebook).
Better option: VADIP
CHAMPVA spouses and children can buy discounted dental insurance through VADIP (Delta Dental or MetLife). See VADIP and Vision & dental.
Not sure? Call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 (TTY 711), Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. ET. The Guidebook says a service listed as covered doesn't guarantee payment. See all CHAMPVA coverage answers.
