Does CHAMPVA cover birth control and IVF?
Educational info, not medical advice. Last verified Oct 11, 2026.
Coverage status: Depends
Short answer: It depends: prescription birth control and sterilization are covered at no cost to you, and infertility testing and treatment are covered, but IVF and artificial insemination are not.
Birth control: covered
- FDA-approved prescription drugs and devices: pills, IUDs, diaphragms, long-term implants.
- Sterilization (vasectomy or tubal ligation).
- Cost when CHAMPVA is primary: no deductible and no cost share.
- Over-the-counter birth control is not covered, except emergency contraception (such as Plan B).
- Reversing a sterilization is not covered.
Fertility: partly covered
- Covered: infertility testing and treatment to correct the cause of infertility (diagnostic tests, surgery, hormone therapy). When CHAMPVA is primary: deductible ($50 per person, $100 per family) and 25% cost share; ambulatory surgery center care has no deductible.
- Not covered: in vitro fertilization (IVF), artificial insemination, and embryo transfer. Federal rule 38 CFR 17.272 excludes IVF, GIFT, and “all other noncoital reproductive technologies.”
