CHAMPVA for primary family caregivers: who qualifies
Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last verified against VA.gov: October 9, 2026 (VA page updated Aug 7, 2026). Changelog
You may qualify for CHAMPVA as a caregiver if both are true:
- You’re the primary family caregiver for a veteran in VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, and
- You don’t have other health insurance.
How you get it
You don’t apply with VA Form 10-10d for this path. Apply for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. If VA decides you qualify for CHAMPVA, it enrolls you automatically.
Things to know
- This is separate from the spouse/child path. A caregiver who is also the spouse of a P&T veteran may qualify through either path.
- If you later get other health insurance, tell VA, because this path requires no other coverage.
