Does CHAMPVA cover chiropractic care?

Short answer: no. The CHAMPVA Guidebook lists chiropractic services under “Therapy Services that are not covered,” and the federal rule (38 CFR 17.272) excludes “chiropractic and naturopathic services.” Acupuncture is also on the Guidebook’s not-covered list.
What that means for you
- If you see a chiropractor, you pay the full bill. CHAMPVA won’t reimburse it, even if the chiropractor takes Medicare.
- Payments for non-covered care don’t count toward CHAMPVA’s $3,000 yearly cap (38 CFR 17.274).
- If you have other health insurance that covers chiropractic care, that plan may pay. Check with your plan. See Medicare and other insurance.
What CHAMPVA covers instead
The Guidebook says physical therapy is covered when it’s prescribed by a physician, physician assistant, or certified nurse practitioner and the exercises improve muscle strength, joint motion, coordination, and endurance. Occupational therapy is covered when it’s prescribed and medically necessary.
When CHAMPVA is primary, you pay the yearly outpatient deductible ($50 per person, $100 per family) and a 25% cost share. When CHAMPVA is secondary, you usually pay nothing.
