Asking a doctor to accept CHAMPVA: a call script

Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last verified against VA.gov: October 9, 2026 (VA page updated Aug 12, 2026). Changelog

Before you call

Have the patient’s CHAMPVA card and any other insurance card ready. Medicare-participating hospitals must accept CHAMPVA for inpatient care; private offices can choose.

Script

“Hi, I’m calling to see if you accept CHAMPVA. It’s the VA health program for veterans’ families. Do you accept assignment from CHAMPVA? That means you’d bill CHAMPVA directly and accept the CHAMPVA allowable amount as payment.”

If they’re unsure:

“CHAMPVA generally pays the same allowable amount as Medicare. Claims go to VHA Office of Integrated Veteran Care, CHAMPVA Claims, PO Box 500, Spring City, PA 19475. Your billing team can call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387 with questions.”

Also ask:

If they say no

You can still be seen. You’ll pay up front and file a claim yourself. CHAMPVA pays only its allowable amount, so you owe anything above it. Or try the provider finder.
